It was a hit!
On 7 September we welcomed 15 newbies, aged 7 - 12 years, to our Sewing Unit and on Sunday, 15 December we wished them a fond farewell. Assisted by 8 fantastic volunteers: Anthea, Jane, Jean, Pat, Sharon, Sue, Susan and Ronnie the children started off hand sewing but it didn't take long before they were on the machines. They were like the proverbial ducks to water with no fear whatsoever! They listened, they were patient (to a point!) and they worked well together. Their sense of achievement was great. They made a decorative cover for their workbook in the first 2 sessions and went on to make items using the same techniques, each week adding a slight alteration that allowed them to manipulate their material to make something completely different. We tried to make it fun and functional at the same time. The feedback from the children and their parents/guardians was very good.
I must mention Freya who joined us last year as a novice and even though she was too old to join this year's session she offered to come along and "buddy up" with the young ones in particular. What an asset she turned out to be and the children loved her.
We're looking forward to starting a new group in February for children (boys and girls), aged 7 - 12 split into 3 groups (7-8, 9-10 and 11-12) for 1.5 hours each Saturday. Please contact us for more details. Proudly funded by the National Lottery Community Fund.
